Employers added 162,000 jobs in August against 65,000 expected, and unemployment held at its July level. Trump did not claim credit. He used his Oval Office remarks to attack the Fed and trade partners over inflation and the 10-year Treasury yield, which climbed after stocks fell Friday, Sept. 4. "Success does not cause inflation. Stupidity causes inflation."

On Sept. 5 the Labor Department reported 162,000 jobs added in August against forecasts near 55,000, with unemployment unchanged from July, and revised June and July up by a combined 55,000, turning July's reported 23,000-job loss into a 21,000-job gain. Average hourly wages rose 3.1% year over year, the weakest since May 2021, and the national debt had crossed $40 trillion on Aug. 19.
