The bill passed with votes from both parties on Wednesday, Sept. 16, and now needs the Senate; it does not itself cap anyone's electric bill.

The House passed the Ratepayer Protection Act on Wednesday, Sept. 16. The bill would push state utility regulators to consider rules that make data centers cover the cost of the power lines, substations and generation their facilities require, instead of spreading those costs across everyone else's monthly bills. The vote was 417-3.

What next. The measure goes to the Senate, which has not scheduled a vote.
