France and Spain evacuate more than 300,000 as record wildfires spread
More than 300,000 hectares have burned across the two countries, with major fires in Gironde, Ávila and Castellón.
France has recorded 116,000 burned hectares and 13,566 fires this year; Spain has recorded about 153,000 hectares—roughly six times its total at the same point last year. The Ávila fire alone has burned more than 50,000 hectares, about five times Barcelona’s area. Around 220,000 people were evacuated in France’s Gironde region, while Spain evacuated roughly 79,000 and confined another 30,000.
