[UPDATE] Iran’s president offers talks but rejects nuclear limits and demands an end to the US naval blockade
Qatari mediators carried messages between US and Iranian negotiators on Sept. 22, their first talks since June.
Iran’s terms. Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said Iran remained open to talks but would not negotiate under threats, according to NBC News. He spoke at the UN General Assembly (the annual gathering where world leaders present their positions). The walkout. The sole US delegate left as Pezeshkian displayed photographs of children killed in the Minab school strike and of Ali Khamenei, Iran’s former supreme leader, killed on Feb. 28. Trump had threatened to “annihilate the Islamic Republic” at the UN on Sept. 22, according to NBC News. Where it stands. Trump said a deal was likely after November’s US congressional elections, without providing details.
