Jack Smith tells senators he would prosecute Trump again, citing proof beyond reasonable doubt
A GOP perjury accusation turned out to confuse the Atlanta Hawks with the Iowa Hawkeyes.
At a four-hour Senate Judiciary hearing, Eric Schmitt (Sen-R Missouri) accused the former special counsel of lying about attending a Feb. 3, 2024 Atlanta Hawks game, but Smith had been at an Iowa Hawkeyes game in Maryland.
What Republicans pressed him on:
- Smith's investigators obtained at least 4,782 donor checks from Sept. 2019 to Aug. 2023, per Chairman Chuck Grassley (Sen-R Iowa).
- Records subpoenaed for 87 White House phones showed contacts with nearly 50 journalists, per Fox News.
- Josh Hawley (Sen-R Missouri) said it is now up to DOJ to prosecute Smith or seek his disbarment.
