The cuts apply to billets, so some general and admiral posts will be downgraded to colonel or Navy captain instead of eliminated, and the services must finish in the middle of the Iran war.

851 active-duty generals and admirals as of July, against a legal cap of 857 (CBS News); ABC News puts the current count at 841.
At least 20 generals, admirals and civilian military leaders have been fired or resigned under Hegseth (CBS News).
A Pentagon official told the Washington Examiner he hopes Hegseth continues to "take a flamethrower to the rot inside this institution."

The cuts apply to billets, so some general and admiral posts will be downgraded to colonel or Navy captain instead of eliminated.
IJR's billet framing, the Sept. 16 O-6 memo it cites, and Fox News's joint-pool memo support this. The story states it in its own voice without naming a source.

The services must finish the cuts in the middle of the Iran war.
This is the desk's own framing and is not attributed. The Washington Examiner supports that the military is on a war footing now, but no source says the war will still be under way through the Jan. 1, 2027 deadline.

ABC News puts the current count of active-duty flag officers at 841.
The story attributes this to ABC News, but ABC is the only source for the figure and it conflicts with CBS and Federal News Network's 851. The story reports both numbers without reconciling them.
Medium
At least 20 generals, admirals and civilian military leaders have been fired or resigned under Hegseth.
The story attributes this to CBS News. No other listed source independently confirms the count.

A Pentagon official told the Washington Examiner he hopes Hegseth continues to 'take a flamethrower to the rot inside this institution.'
The story attributes the quote to an unnamed Pentagon official speaking to the Washington Examiner. Only that outlet carries it, and the speaker is not identified.
