About 101,000 Ukrainians and 1,800 Sudanese keep Temporary Protected Status (TPS, which blocks deportation and allows work) past the Monday, Oct. 19 expiration, DHS said. PBS NewsHour (AP) reports the administration has ended TPS for more than 1 million people from 13 countries, so this is an exception. The decision came two weeks before the Nov. 3 midterms, and DHS gave no reason.

  • Duration: the Ukraine Immigration Task Force says federal law already extended Ukraine's status six months, to April 19, 2027, because DHS missed an Aug. 20 decision deadline; USCIS has not adopted that date.
  • Work permits: DHS did not answer whether they stay valid (AP).
  • Reaction: Yuriy Boyechko of Hope For Ukraine called it a "bandage" that "does not solve the real issue"; Andrew Arthur of the Center for Immigration Studies said it is "an extension until it is a termination" (NBC News, The Guardian).
