Africa is projected to drive the next wave of megacity growth

Luanda could overtake São Paulo around 2045 and Shanghai late in the century.

São Paulo’s population has grown about sixfold since 1950 and Shanghai’s nearly ninefold, but the JRC projections have São Paulo declining after 2020 and Shanghai peaking around 2050. Luanda, Cairo, Dar es Salaam and Addis Ababa keep climbing through 2100 in the model; Luanda rises from about 9.8 million people in 2020 to 30.7 million.
