Treasury doubled planned bond buybacks to $4 billion and the 30-year yield fell to 5.18%

The long end calmed for a day; analysts doubt $2 billion more buys much.

The Treasury doubled its planned buybacks of longer-dated debt from $2 billion to $4 billion for September 9 through November 4, after the 30-year yield hit 5.34% on Tuesday, its highest in almost 20 years. The yield eased to 5.18% once the buybacks were announced. Analysts told BBC News that against the size of outstanding Treasury debt, an increase that size was unlikely to bring lasting relief.
