ICE orders 6,000 electric-shock gloves in no-bid deal
Democratic senators want the purchase halted, while California lawmakers are moving to ban federal agents from using the devices.
The $16.7 million no-bid contract buys 6,000 gloves—about $2,783 each before any undisclosed support costs. ICE has not said where they will be deployed or whether they will be distributed one per officer. The gloves must touch bare skin to shock someone who is “actively or passively resisting.” The manufacturer’s manual says they should not be used on elderly people, pregnant women, small children or people it calls “severely handicapped.”
