Armed man rushed Ohio Democratic governor candidate Amy Acton at the Canfield Fair, knocking down two attendees; he faces two assault counts

The rush. An armed man pushed through a crowd toward Amy Acton (D-OH), the Democratic nominee for Ohio governor, inside the Mahoning County Democratic Party tent at the Canfield Fair on Sunday, Sept. 6, around 2:30 p.m. He knocked two attendees to the ground, including an elderly man with Parkinson's who hit his head. Acton's Ohio State Highway Patrol security detail and fair police took him down within moments, before he drew either handgun. Acton was not hurt and stayed on site to help one of the injured. The suspect. Mahoning County Sheriff Jerry Greene identified the suspect as Patrick Havas, 38, of Canfield, who entered the tent holding up a phone as if recording. He was booked on two counts of assault and one count of disorderly conduct and is held without bond. No motive has been stated. "He literally bull-rushed through the crowd, knocked our volunteers down… pushed and knocked the elderly gentleman over with Parkinson's, and the gentleman hit his head and fell — a gun was exposed after brass knuckles fell off his fingers." — Wayne Penny Jr. (D-OH), an Ohio House candidate who was in the tent (TS: Ohio dropped its concealed-carry permit requirement in 2022, and brass knuckles stopped being banned that same year.) Still open. No hospital, sheriff's office or campaign has released a condition update for either injured attendee, and neither Acton's campaign nor the Highway Patrol has announced any change to her security or schedule.

Republicans who condemned the attack on the Democratic nominee:

• Mike DeWine (Gov-R Ohio) called Acton personally and said afterward that she is "ok"; he called the violence unacceptable
• Vivek Ramaswamy (R-OH), her opponent, condemned the attack through his campaign; he was scheduled at the same fair that afternoon
