August inflation holds at 3.4% annually; gasoline drives monthly increase

Consumer prices rose 0.4% over the month, compared with 0.1% in July, according to BLS.

The September 11 release shows consumer prices rose 0.4% in August after seasonal adjustment, compared with 0.1% in July. Annual inflation remained at 3.4%.

What moved:

Gasoline rose 3.9% over the month and accounted for more than one-third of the overall monthly increase.
Core prices, excluding food and energy, rose 0.3% monthly and 2.4% annually.

These are observed August readings. A monthly increase measures the change from July; the annual figure compares August with August 2025.
