[UPDATE] Ohio passes a gas-tax holiday, joining about a third of states cutting fuel taxes

Iran-war fuel prices are pushing states to cut taxes before the midterms

Ohio passed a gas-tax holiday and will replace the lost road money with $725 million from its general fund. Regular gas averages $4.43 a gallon, up about 50% since the Iran war began (AAA, via ABC News). Ohio joins about a third of states now offering some fuel-tax relief.

  • March — Georgia suspended its fuel tax, then extended the suspension into June.
  • Sept. 28 — Greg Abbott (Gov-R Texas) declared a diesel disaster, letting farmers and loggers run tax-free dyed diesel on highways. Louisiana had declared a fuel emergency the week before.
  • Sept. 29 — Brian Kemp (Gov-R Georgia) suspended the state's 33.3-cent gasoline and 37.3-cent diesel taxes again, for 30 days through Oct. 29.

The pump numbers:

  • Average US diesel: $6.41 a gallon, a few cents shy of last week's record (AAA).
  • ABC reports Ohio's move was spurred by its race for governor.
