DOJ filed 40 cases to strip citizenship from naturalized citizens convicted of crimes since Aug. 21

The department is aiming for 250 cases by the end of October.

The Justice Department filed the 40 cases in federal courts between Aug. 21 and Oct. 2 and has set a goal of 250 cases this month, about twice the roughly 120 people denaturalized from 2017 to late 2025.

Key figures and claims:

  • Assistant AG Brett Shumate: "Every single one of these individuals lied their way into U.S. citizenship."
  • DOJ had identified 384 foreign-born citizens for possible revocation, the NYT reported in April.
