[UPDATE] White House: Trump's super PAC will pay only for future promo ads, not repay the $11 million taxpayers already spent
Schumer says he will file an FEC complaint, but only 2 of the commission's 6 seats are filled.
A day after Trump said he and MAGA Inc. would pay for the "Patriotic Ads" that DHS had funded through a $20 million contract, the White House said on Tuesday, Oct. 6, that the pledge covers future ads only: "The President's Truth was not referring to reimbursement." Taxpayers have already paid for at least $11 million in airtime since September, per an AdImpact analysis for the AP.
The reaction:
- Chuck Schumer (Sen-D New York) asked two government watchdogs to investigate and said he will file a Federal Election Commission complaint alleging illegal coordination.
- Speaker Mike Johnson (Rep-R Louisiana): "If the Super PAC's funding them, that's good."
