Newsom demands 25th Amendment after Trump says of Iran, 'let them take out Los Angeles'
White House says Trump was warning about a nuclear Iran; several frequent Trump critics agree the clip was misread.
Newsom called Trump's Iran remarks "dangerous, if not treasonous." Trump made the remarks at a rally in Nebraska on Monday, Oct. 5. Newsom was reacting to a widely shared version of them. In it, Trump calls an Iranian strike on Los Angeles and San Diego a small price to pay. CNN's Daniel Dale said that version "isn't a direct quote." He said it is also not "a correct paraphrase."
California's response:
- Newsom put California's threat-assessment center on alert to monitor for threats.
- Newsom cited more than 130,000 active-duty military personnel stationed in San Diego, one of the two cities named in the circulating version.
- San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria: "No American city should ever be described as expendable or an acceptable price to pay."
