UNC-Chapel Hill settles Trump administration civil rights probes without a payment or admission of wrongdoing

UNC must file quarterly compliance reports through Dec. 31, 2028, and keeps its eligibility for federal funding.

UNC-Chapel Hill settled federal civil rights investigations, including a Justice Department review of race in admissions, with no penalty, Bloomberg reports. UNC says the deal closes the cases "without adverse action or adverse finding" and that it admits no wrongdoing and pays nothing; the Justice Department's announcement does not say investigators found a violation.

  • Admissions: UNC agreed to bar race and racial proxies in admissions, which the 2023 Supreme Court ruling in the Students for Fair Admissions case already required, and to keep race out of scholarships and student programs (Justice Department).
  • Campus: UNC adds a Title VI coordinator and mandatory antisemitism training, and bans masks that hide identity, with medical and religious exceptions.
  • Term: the agreement runs through Dec. 31, 2028; UNC says any remaining probes are paused and close if it meets its obligations.
