Okinawa police arrest a 20-year-old U.S. Marine on suspicion of killing and robbing a Japanese woman, 39
Tokyo lodged a strong protest; the Marine denies the allegations.
Police say Lance Cpl. Devin Jacob Ballard, based at Marine Corps Air Station Futenma, killed Anna Yagi in a Naha hotel early Saturday, Oct. 3, and took her wallet and backpack. He denies it and is in Japanese custody.
Tokyo's response:
- Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi summoned U.S. Ambassador George Glass to protest.
- Genta Koja (Governor, Okinawa, Japan): "I must say, discipline and troop education are not working at all."
- Okinawa holds 70% of U.S. military facilities in Japan (The Guardian).
