[UPDATE] Flávio Bolsonaro finishes first over Lula (President, Brazil), forcing an Oct. 25 runoff
A White House adviser says Trump's silence during the race was deliberate; a Bolsonaro win would give Trump a key Latin American ally.
With 99.8% of votes counted, Bolsonaro had just over 56 million votes to Lula's 53.7 million, and Lula is now trying to reset a campaign that had hoped to win outright in the first round.

Polls heading into Brazil's Oct. 4 first-round vote showed a close race, and the final Datafolha poll put Lula ahead 42%-38%. Lula's campaign had hoped to win outright with more than half the valid votes.
What each side said:
- Lula: "I am very good in the knockout stage."
- Flávio Bolsonaro: "It's the end of the Workers' Party era."
