[UPDATE] Saudi-backed Yemeni government forces say they took Mocha and secured the Bab el-Mandeb Strait

Houthi-run media deny the gains.

The Giants Brigades spearheaded the push on Mocha on Monday, Oct. 5, under heavy Saudi air cover, and government forces say they secured the strait around the Dhubab district. The Saudi-led coalition says its jets hit more than 300 targets; Houthi media deny the advance, and the Houthis say they fired missiles and drones at Saudi Aramco sites.

  • Sep. 11 — The Houthis seized Perim Island at the mouth of the Red Sea, as more than 100 U.S. advisers supported the Saudi campaign against them.
  • Sep. 14 — The Houthis claimed new missile and drone strikes on Saudi Arabia; a projectile wounded two in al-Tawwal.
  • Sep. 23 — Gulf leaders urged Trump not to escalate with Iran after weekend strikes, fearing a wider war and less U.S. defense help.
  • Oct. 2 — Vance chaired a secret Camp David meeting of Trump's security cabinet on resuming the Iran war and the Saudi request; Trump did not attend.
  • Oct. 3 — The U.S. refused Saudi requests to bomb the Houthis and sent targeting data for a Saudi ground offensive instead.
  • Oct. 4 — Yemen's government launched an offensive to retake all Houthi-held land, including Sanaa, with U.S. intelligence but no U.S. strikes "for now."
