Trump signs order easing limits on tax-exempt red diesel, which skips the 24.4-cent federal road-fuel tax

The order also tells the Transportation Department to work with states on waiving their own diesel taxes; only Ohio, Georgia and Kentucky have suspended theirs.

Trump signed an executive order Monday, Oct. 5, loosening the rules on dyed diesel. Red diesel is ordinary diesel dyed red to mark it for untaxed off-road use, such as tractors, construction equipment and generators. It skips the 24.4-cent-a-gallon federal highway tax. The goal is to cut record-high fuel costs before the November midterm elections. Vice President JD Vance pushed the idea as relief for farmers. The national average diesel price was $6.32 a gallon Monday, per the Washington Examiner. Still open. Analysts doubt the order will move pump prices much.
