OpenAI bans ChatGPT accounts behind Russian and Iranian covert influence operations
Iran's fake reporters pitched US-Iran war stories; CNN says some ran in US outlets
OpenAI has banned ChatGPT accounts behind two covert influence operations, one linked to Russia and one to Iran, its latest safety report says. The Iran-linked 'Bogus Bylines' effort used fake journalist personas to pitch stories about the US-Iran war.
The two operations:
- Russia-linked: ran a fake think tank aimed at Latin America
- Iran-linked: 'Bogus Bylines' fake journalist personas pitching US-Iran war stories (the Washington Examiner counts seven; no second outlet has confirmed that number)
