[UPDATE] Hurricane Isaias kills four in Florida and Alabama after Category 2 landfall near Destin

Two died in each state; nearly 900,000 customers in Alabama, Florida and Georgia lost power.

Isaias came ashore near Destin, Fla., about 9:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 9, with 105-mph winds, after weakening from Category 3. Nearly 900,000 customers in Alabama, Florida and Georgia were without power on the morning of Saturday, Oct. 10.

Isaias strengthened into a hurricane ahead of landfall and briefly reached Category 3 with 120-mph winds. Alabama, Florida and Georgia declared states of emergency, and forecasters warned of up to 9 feet of storm surge between the Santa Rosa/Okaloosa county line and Grayton Beach.

Power and evacuations:

  • About 700,000 customers still lacked power that afternoon, per the NYT; the BBC put it at 600,000.
  • About 900,000 Floridians evacuated, and the state staged 16,000 utility workers before landfall.
