The U.S. has banned imports of Canadian alcoholic beverages, dairy and motor-vehicle products outright — what economist Justin Wolfers calls the economic equivalent of an infinite tariff — through five presidential proclamations with no congressional vote. The bans stack on the 50% tariffs already on hundreds of Canadian goods.

Canada matched dollar-for-dollar with tariffs on $20 billion in U.S. imports, a fraction of the $762.10 billion in total 2024 trade, per Census Bureau data.
