ATF stops enforcing registration of suppressors and short-barreled rifles and shotguns for everyone, nationwide
Machine guns and destructive devices stay fully regulated.
A Texas judge's August ruling covered only the plaintiffs, who included 15 Republican-led states, but ATF is applying it to everyone starting Oct. 9.
How it got here:
- Congress eliminated the NFA tax on these items, which led Judge Hendrix to strike the registration rules in August.
- The DOJ did not appeal the ruling, on Trump's order.
- State and local gun laws still apply, and the NFA tax remains on machine guns and destructive devices.
