Federal judge voids DOJ policy of collecting state voter rolls to check against immigration databases
US District Judge Sparkle Sooknanan ruled the policy broke the Privacy Act and exceeded federal authority, since Congress left voter-roll upkeep to the states. The Supreme Court temporarily set aside her earlier June ruling against the administration.
- Sooknanan's ruling runs 78 pages.
- About 18 states had already handed their voter files to DOJ.
- Common Cause sued after DOJ requested state voter data in May.
