US imposes blocking sanctions on the ICC itself, cutting the court off from US banking, technology and dollars
Announced hours after former ICC judge Navi Pillay won the Nobel Peace Prize.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio's order is the administration's first against the court as an institution rather than its officials, and it gives US companies 180 days to wind down business with it.
- Earlier targets: 17 ICC-linked individuals, per Fox News, including ICC President Tomoko Akane in August.
- Court membership: 125 countries are ICC states parties.
- Rubio: "Either the ICC will end its threats, or we will end the ICC." The court called the sanctions "an assault on the rule of law."
