Brent oil exceeds $100 a barrel; US diesel reaches $5.94 a gallon

The Energy Information Administration raised its forecast for average diesel prices in 2027 to $4.40 a gallon from $4.07, Axios reports.

Houthi attacks on four Saudi cities wounded more than 70 people, The Guardian reports.

ContextDiesel fuels freight trucks and farm equipment, linking higher costs to food and delivery prices. The Energy Information Administration expects distillate inventories (stored fuels including diesel and heating oil) to fall below 100 million barrels in September. That would put supplies below the 2021–2025 low, where the agency expects them to remain through much of 2027, [Axios](https://axios.com/2026/09/09/energy-department-hikes-2027-diesel-price-outlook) reports. Fall refinery maintenance reduces fuel output just as harvest and heating demand arrive, adding pressure to already tight diesel supplies, according to the EIA outlook reported by [Axios](https://axios.com/2026/09/09/energy-department-hikes-2027-diesel-price-outlook).

Treasury plans $6 billion bond buyback; 10-year yield reaches 4.85%

The September 10 purchase is triple the previous $2 billion operation and above the $4 billion minimum announced in August.

The purchase. Treasury announced September 9 that it would buy up to $6 billion of older bonds with 10–20 years remaining to maturity. The operation is scheduled for September 10. Reuters

The purpose. These purchases give investors a regular buyer for older, less-easily-traded bonds. Treasury describes the program as liquidity support and says it is not intended to address acute market stress. Treasury FAQ

Borrowing costs. The 10-year yield reached 4.85% on September 9, its highest since November 2023, according to NBC News. That rise preceded the scheduled purchase; it does not show the operation itself failed. NBC News
